Band on Broadway-Our Band Heritage Vol.18 Allentown Band-Ronald Demkee, conductor The historic Allentown Band, 176 years strong, continues to be a good will ambassador of the people's music. Band on Broadway shows the ensemble at its best and features classic melodies arranged by the master craftsmen. Such names as Robert Russell Bennett and Warren Barker are synonymous with excellence in Broadway bandstration. Of special interest is a long overdue recording of Slaughter on Tenth Avenue (Rodgers/Lang) ... but watch out for a gun shot past the one minute mark! An enjoyable and highly recommended recording."

A few words of caution: Season's Greetings is not your typical holiday album AND brace yourself for the four-manual renaissance digital organ! Leave it to the historic Allentown Band to produce this must have recording. Among the unexpected treasures for the listner are Variants on a Moravian Hymn (Barnes), Carol of the Shepherds (Sparke), and the Eighth Candle (Reisteter). For the holiday purists, the customary LeRoy Anderson two-some is included. The final selection is Russian Christmas Music (Reed) and the addition of organ cannot be described in mere words!

As with all live recordings, there is a quality to this performance that is absent in any staged recording session, which is the "reality" of the moment - the true interplay of music, musicians, and audience. In all, there are many things that make this presentation of Elijah unique, and well worth a close listen.

I cannot think of a better tribute to the 150th anniversary of Sousa’s birth than this superlative recording by the Allentown Band. This is a band rich in history and was well received by the March King. Ronald Demkee has chosen a program featuring many compositions that will be unfamiliar to the casual listener but are most deserving of an audience. Sesquicentennial is much more than your average Sousa march collection; this is a fascinating arrary of various work that show a side of Sousa few have known. I highly recommend this magnificent recording.

As the nation's oldest civilian concert band, its first performance happened in Allentown, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1828. Besides playing regular concerts and appearing in local parades, the band has also performed at numerous Presidential inaugurations, traveled across the world, and helped rally troops during our country's Civil War.
